No More “Pow” in my Kung Pao

Wonder why you cant stop at just one potato chip?? Or why the chicken at any fast food restaurant tastes so amazing – you are licking your fingers at the end?

Well, I may just have the answer for you…. Its crack!

Well ……. Obviously its not really crack cocaine but in the world of food and eating – it is considered to be.  It is MSG.

You may consider yourself safe because you when you go the Chinese Restaurant  you tell them in your firmest voice… “Please hold the MSG….”  which of course triggers a smirk from the likes of people such as myself….. BECAUSE that really means didly squat in today’s world.

When you are saying hold the MSG to a Chinese stir fry, try saying that to your potato chips, instant noodles, your chicken meals or sausage dishes, KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, soups and salad dressings, soy sauce, chicken and vegetable broth, any flavored chips (i.e. Doritos, Tostitos, Cheetos etc etc.), any canned or packaged items, most kids fancy foods like spagettio’s  and the list continues.

So, are you the person (which I claim to be as well) who avoids all fast food chains, as well as packaged foods and flavored foods.  Well, you will probably never read the exact word “MSG” written on any product.

It gets all that much better……..MSG is disguised under all of these names:

Monosodium Glutamate

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

Hydrolyzed Protein

Hydrolyzed Plant Protein

Plant Protein Extract

Sodium Caseinate

Calcium Caseinate

Yeast Extract

Textured Protein (Including TVP)

Autolyzed Yeast

Hydrolyzed Oat Flour

Corn Oil

Why, you ask, does one product have so many code names.  Well …….that’s the lengths that Companies will go to have you buy their product.

Why would a normal person who knows of the danger of MSG continue to buy it….that’s exactly it!!!!  If they don’t know its in there – then they will carry on purchasing it. This in turn will allow the companies of processed foods/fast food restaurants etc, to continue creating bad quality food and will not require them to improve it and raise their costs. So they will go to extreme measures and moreover the FDA has allowed this “name change” business to be allowed.

Natural Flavorings….Naturally Flavored….Artificial and Natural Flavors  are a signal that MSG is in the product. Makes you stop and think for a second.

Well we wont bore with you all the little games conglomerates and the FDA play to take advantage of us and feed us bad stuff so they can gain monetarily.

I will just tell you what MSG or Monosodium Glutamate is:

MSG is technically, a “flavor enhancer”. It is a white powder (looks like salt) derived from glutamic acid, an amino acid found naturally found in many foods such as seaweed, sugar beets, cereal glutens, and other vegetables. Although it has no real flavor of its own, MSG greatly enhances the taste of foods hence why it is so popular.  “Processed MSG is created when protein is either partially or fully broken apart into its constituent amino acids, or glutamic acid is secreted from selected bacteria.”

MSG is also the cause of many physical problems. It enhances the flavor to the point where it triggers the brain to continue eating (whether you are hungry or not) it is like a drug in that sense. That is partially another reason manufacturers like to use it- making their food physically irresistible. Yet another reason for them to disguise the name of the product – so you don’t know its there and think the food is really that good!

MSG stimulates appetite (this is called excitotoxin) this is also stimulates the brain. The brain does not have the same immune system as the body – and cannot fight off such inflammations as the body can. The long term effect of this is a slow degradation of the surrounding tissue of the brain and  is why MSG has been implicated in causing Alzheimer’s.

BTW, if you are eating something that is sensational and you cant believe how good it tastes – try to notice your body signals to identify if its MSG related.  I think I am blessed in that regard.  Everytime I have a meal or something with MSG in it – my mouth has a sort of numbness or tingling sensation. And upon researching, discovered that is one of the side effects. It is also known to trigger migraines, dizziness, nausea, excess sweating Rapid or irregular heartbeat, skin rash, extreme thirst, feeling sleepy, ringing ears and tingling in the mouth.

Ironically, looks like the Chinese restaurant seems to be the least of your worries. Not to mention, that most chinese resatuants have stopped using it- its just about everything else you have to be worried about!

Be conscious of everything around you!
